Easy Tie Dye Shirts
Blog #121: The Tie dye trend has been around for a while now and it seems like it’s here to stay a bit longer. Part of the reason is, it’s a fun easy DIY project. Second tie dye became more popular during quarantine, as it gave people something fun to do. Most stores are sold out of the tie dye kits and white shirts.
I agree tie dye projects are definitely fun even though I am more of a plain and neutral gal. The thought for this project came to mind because I had a few shirts I only wear at home and have become stained with food from cooking or my baby. One thing I won’t do is donate stained clothes! It has become a fun project to use fabric paints to “hide” the stain. A few months ago I did a onesie craft with a unicorn. I had the stencil for a while and wanted to use it for something and so I repurposed the onesie to donate.

Supplies
The kit comes with extra dye for another project or larger project. I was lucky to find a kit at my local Michael’s craft store. For $20.00 you get everything you need.
The Kit comes with:
- 5 bottles with dye- pink, purple, yellow, green and blue
- Extra dye
- Rubber bands
- 4 pairs of gloves
In addition to the kit, you will need:
- a trash bag
- paper towels
- plastic wrap
- Old or new white t-shirts, socks, tote; just about any fabric will do.
Tie Dyeing is Super Easy!
Lay out a trash bag on a table or outside and cover with paper towels. Keep paper towels nearby and plastic wrap.
There are lots of design options with the instructions and online. Then add water to each bottle and shake to mix the powder and water. Rubber band your shirt to your style of choice and start dying your shirt. This only takes a few minutes. Once complete wrap the shirt in plastic wrap. And let it sit for 6-8 hours. Rinse well and dry. Per directions, it says to wash the first couple of times on its own.
That is it! I had so much fun doing this project with my oldest son. He really enjoyed it. He got to make a shirt for himself as well!

I love your baby’s onesie. I bet that was a great activity to do with your son. My daughter would have loved it at a similar age. We were always doing art and craft projects together.
It was so much fun! He is only 12 months but loves to doodle with markers! I am sure you miss those days. However, I love all the stages so far with my kids. New things we do. Once they become teenagers maybe not so much!
