Valentine’s Day Chocolate & Fruit Dessert

Valentine’s Day should be celebrated everyday instead of once a year. We should celebrate love everyday. Whether it’s Valentine’s Day or not. However, it is a cute holiday. I do like the candy and chocolate and the colors of pink and red! Very pretty. Valentine’s Day is also another excuse to eat chocolate and other sweets. This year, instead of buying candy for the kids, I am making chocolate & fruit dessert. You get chocolate, but you also get the fruits! Valentine’s Day Chocolate & Fruit Dessert!

Healthy Desserts

There are so many different desserts to make for Valentine’s Day. You can go with red, white or a pink theme. Then there is candy and chocolate. I ALWAYS go for chocolate over candy, any day! To eat healthier desserts this holiday season, I decided on making chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate covered bananas and chocolate raspberries. You can’t go wrong with chocolate & Fruit Dessert! Of course, you can make heart shaped dishes for breakfast, lunch or dinner. These desserts do not require any cooking, besides melting the chocolate, using the double boiler method. You can also melt the chocolate in the microwave, if you wish.

Types of Chocolate

The less sugar the better, right? Dark chocolate has many benefits, especially as you go darker in cacao percentage. Once in a blue I go for the 88% dark chocolate. Especially when making Chocolate Covered Dates with Almonds// 3 Ingredients. In the end, pick your favorite chocolate to make these desserts. I went for milk chocolate, as it is my favorite. Most of the time, I go for Toll House brand. But for these desserts, I used the 365 Whole Foods Milk Chocolate Chips, at 27% cacao. They were really good. Not overly sweet. I may switch brands! Even my husband noticed the difference.

How to Make Chocolate Covered Bananas & Strawberries

Start by rinsing and drying the strawberries well. Before peeling the bananas, cut them in half, with the banana peel still on. Stick a popsicle stick into each one. Then carefully remove the banana peel. Either use the double boiler method or the microwave and melt the chocolate.

Next, dip each strawberry into the melted chocolate, covering most of the strawberry. You can also dip it in sprinkles for extra fun colors (optional). For the chocolate covered bananas, use a spoon to coat it with chocolate. Since the bananas are soft, they will fall off the stick if dipped directed into the chocolate. Lay the fruits on parchment paper to harden. I keep them in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to harden. Overall, these desserts took about 10 minutes plus 30 minutes for chill time.

How to Make Chocolate Raspberries

The raspberries take 2 minutes to put together! All you do is, insert a chocolate chip to each raspberry and serve!

Below see the Ingredients needed for the chocolate covered bananas, strawberries & raspberries.

Chocolate covered bananas Ingredients

  • 3 bananas, not overly ripe, cut in half

  • 1 cup of chocolate chips, melted

  • red sugar sprinkles (optional)

  • 6 popsicle sticks

chocolate covered strawberries Ingredients

  • 16 oz of strawberries, rinsed and dried well

  • 1 1/4 cup of chocolate chips, melted

  • sprinkles (optional)

Chocolate Raspberries Ingredients

  • 6 oz of raspberries

  • 1/2 cup of chocolate chips

Should You Add Oil to Your Chocolate?

Adding a little bit of oil, when melting chocolate helps in two ways. One it gives the chocolate a nice shiny look and second it gives it a nice, smoother consistency. I however, never add oil to my chocolate because I am making it for my home. I don’t need the extra shiny look. Yet, I do get a nice smooth consistency using the double boiler method vs melting the chocolate in the microwave. If I was making this as a gift, then maybe. Yet again, less fat, the better for me and the chocolate covered fruits look and taste great without the oil! In the end, you can decide what you like best!

My number one dessert is chocolate covered strawberries, but I have MANY favorites! What is your favorite Valentine’s Day dessert?

Enjoy!
