Getting Back To a School Routine
Many kids have already started school. My kids always start after Labor Day. Whether your kids have already started school or not, it is important to getting back to a school routine. We all benefit from having a routine, especially kids!
School Routine
Three things that help getting into a school routine are: having a schedule, sleep and eating healthy.
Change of Schedule
Summers change our normal school routine. Many kids tend to wake up later and go to bed late. It is important to start getting to bed early and of course wake up early. As kids get older, it means more homework and more after school activities, which makes going to bed early a lot harder. Maybe shower at night instead of in the morning, if it makes things easier. Have your child make use of his agenda. Not just for homework but also jotting down after school activities, such as basketball practice. This will teach your child to become more organized and learn to prioritize what is important from day to day.
Get Some Zzzz
With late night studying for tests, this means your child is up later studying and getting home later from sport practices or other activities. These means your child may catch up with sleep mostly on the weekends. Going to bed around the same time every night trains our body to wake up and go to sleep naturally without much use of an alarm clock. I still like to use an alarm clock when I am fatigue from nursing my little one all night!
Routine of Eating Healthy
We should eat healthy most of the time. Make sure your kids are up in time to have breakfast at home and try to eat dinner together. Your summer schedule may be different than your school schedule. As a family you may eat earlier or later. Discuss what time dinner dinner will be. With after school activities and working parents it can be hard to make time for healthy meals and eating together!
Snacks
Most schools are nut free. I like to remind my kids which snacks can go to school vs which ones are just for home snacking due to many foods containing traces of nuts. There also healthy snacks to make for your kids to keep them full until dinner time! Try Healthy Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookies/5 Ingredients, Pizza Muffins for School Lunch and How to Make Chocolate Pumpkin Granola. I have been making chocolate pumpkin granola for the last couple of weeks. My family and I enjoy it as is or topped over a yogurt parfait or acai bowl!
